With more than 15 centimetres of snow on the ground, clear skies and temperatures ranging between -13 and -22, the 70th annual Christmas Bird Count is a wrap for 2017. The count, held on Sunday, Dec 17, had more than 50 volunteers helping identify and count 82 bird species and 16,910 individual birds. According to the report filed by Mark D. Read with the Kingston Field Naturalists, this count is below the 20-year average of identifying 103 species and is less than 2015’s low count of 84.

The greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) is disappearing from UK gardens because of a deadly disease - with numbers more than halving in a decade, new research has warned. The greenfinch's colourful plumage and distinctive twittering once made it one of our most familiar feathered friends. But numbers have plunged by an alarming 59 per cent in just 10 years - sparking concerns for its very future on these shores, warn bird watchers.

Birds that travel long distances between their wintering and breeding grounds may be particularly susceptible to neurotoxic insecticides, but the influence of insecticides on migration ability is poorly understood. Following acute exposure to two widely used agricultural insecticides, imidacloprid (neonicotinoid) and chlorpyrifos (organophosphate), we compared effects on body mass, migratory activity and orientation in a seed-eating bird, the white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys).

Einen ganzen Schwarm toter Stare (Sturnus vulgaris) fanden Anwohner in der Ortsdurchfahrt von Bad Wildungen-Mandern vor. Alle lagen in einem Umkreis von rund 50 Metern. Die meisten Vögel waren bereits vom Durchgangsverkehr plattgefahren. Einige Anwohner, darunter auch Karl-Heinz Paul, fanden die Tiere und suchten nach Erklärungen: „46 tote Stare im Umkreis von 50 Metern, dass ist schon sehr merkwürdig“. In anderen Ländern kam es in der Vergangenheit bereits öfter zu solchen Phänomenen.

Die Zahlen, die der Naturschutzbund (Nabu) heute veröffentlichte, sind so alarmierend, dass Tierschützer bereits von einem "regelrechten Vogelsterben" sprechen. 12,7 Millionen Brutpaare gingen in nur zwölf Jahren verloren. Besorgniserregend ist vor allem der Rückgang bei verbreiteten Arten.12,7 Millionen oder 15 Prozent aller Vogelbrutpaare in Deutschland, das ist die dramatische Bilanz der heute veröffentlichten Auswertung. Diese beruht auf Vogelbestandsdaten, die die Bundesregierung 2013 an die EU gemeldet hat.

In his book, Dutch toxicologist Henk Tennekes (2010) makes the case that the contamination of surface water by neonicotinoids is so widespread in the Netherlands (and possibly elsewhere in Europe), that loss of insect biomass on a continental scale is behind many of the widespread declines that are being seen, be they of marsh birds, heath or meadow birds or even coastal species. This suggests that we should be looking at possible links between neonicotinoid insecticides and birds, not on a farm scale, but in the context of whole watersheds and regions.

Grünfinken (Chloris chloris, Syn.: Carduelis chloris) oder Grünlinge sehen – grob gesprochen – aus wie gelbgrüne Spatzen und gehören zu den 15 häufigsten Singvogelarten Österreichs: Die Brutvogelerfassung durch den Verein Birdlife ergab im Jahr 2012 einen bundesweiten Bestand von rund 235.000 Brutpaaren. In den vergangenen fünf Jahren hat sich diese Zahl allerdings um mehr als die Hälfte verringert. Schuld daran dürften ein Bakterium und ein mikroskopisch kleiner Parasit sein, der die Art bevorzugt als Wirt benutzt.
